Week Four: What do we teach them?

Hey guys! Below is an outline for this week. Given the number of students who are moving to an ‘assessments only’ stand-point for this unit (myself included), I haven’t put ALL the attachments up for this week. I will continue to post the blog each week, try to unearth the weekly readings (and attach them here), as well as bugging Robert for access to them. I just won’t be posting all the extra reading that can be found under each weekly topic 🙂

  1. Listen to the lecture and read the Week Four Lecture Notes. https://youtu.be/J6TAnh75YbY <— Lecture Link
  2. Work through the activity book and below questions
    • Reading: Australian Curriculum – Science (Refer to topic one for link)
    • Reading: Duncon and Killher – Awaiting reply from Robert as it is not available on Blackboard or via Curtin Library or Google
    • Question: Which year does the Earth and Science strand look at soil?
    • Question: Which year does the Earth and Science strand look at space?
    • Question: How is Science as a Human Endeavour taught?
  3. There is a section this week on Science Curriculum. There are three PDFs here for you to read through under this section.
  4. Read through any of the Inspire documents on Blacboard which look interesting to you. This week they are focused on fossils, rock roulette and earthquake activities. Some of these are definitely worth saving 🙂

Week Three: How Students Learn

Hi all! Here is the Week Three topic “To Do” plus all the readings and resources 🙂

  1. Watch the lecture and read the Wk 3 Lecture Notes

2. Watch the Meet the Elements video!

3. Work through the Wk 3 Activity Book

4. Discussion Board Questions

  • How can you use the film cannister rocket (http://www.ellentv.com/2013/02/27/its-raining-film-canisters/) to find out what students know?
  • How does the child’s developmental level impact on the material that you teach? For example, why do you not teach the atom to Year Three students? (Listen/Watch the two files “Constructivist” and “Piaget on Constructivism” in the Inspire section of the topic page on Blackboard. Couldn’t upload these without paying for the blog site!)
  • Look at the concept cartoons. Create your own one to address a chemistry misconception.

5. Optional Extras from the Inspire section

Week Two: Science Investigations

Here is Week 2 – Topic Two: Science Investigations.
Just to be extra clear with the Goldsworthy reading – I emailed Robert about this asking where we could find it. He replied that this is indeed a book but there is no online version that we can access without paying. He said it is a recommended text and not a required one so we do not have to read this. If you do want to be extra thorough, you’ll have to purchase the book and wait for it to be delivered. There is no Trello activity this week listed on Blackboard.
  1. Listen to the lecture https://youtu.be/XOzxebaqCy4?list=PLYBBqb1q-upYWpjWJKAoF-muKzr41lOD7 and view the lecture notes [Attached]
  2. Work through the activity book [Attached]
    1. Reading: See Week One reading from ACARA on science structure
    2. Reading: Look! Listen! (Previously known as Sound Sensational) [Attached]
    3. Reading: Schoolyard Safari [Attached]
    4. Reading: Smooth Moves [Attached]
    5. Reading: Water Works (Previously known as Water in My World) [Attached]
    6. Reading: Staying Alive [Attached]
    7. Reading: Goldsworthy. Making Sense of Primary Science Investigations
    8. Reading: Skamp. Teaching Chemistry in Primary Science – What does the research suggest? [Attached]
    9. Note: You will also have to refer to the Hackling reading from week one when the activity book asks
    10. Make you slime/Oobleck!! [Recipe attached]
    11. Question One (from BB): Identify and explain 2 science concepts that you have discovered in this weeks workshop, consider how you could explain them to a primary child
    12. Question Two (from BB): How would you use slime and Oobleck in the science setting? What science concepts could we demonstrate with these strange substances?
    13. Question Three (from BB): Consider and list (we will discuss later) some of the management and safety issues that need to be considered when thinking about the slime and Oobleck activity
    14. Look over and save the seven “How to” PDFs in the Class Resources section of Topic 2. “They will act as reminders to ensure you teach the correct terminology and scaffold investigations in a consistent way”
  3. Watch the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKfrg6oIjh0 “Consider the notion of wait time and also the value of preparing key questions”
  4. Inspirations Section – look over the couple of resources in there if you feel so inclined! There are three PDFs, two videos and a fantastic looking app which animates solids/liquids/gases

Below is the “To Do” for Week One. If I have missed anything important, please hit “Reply All” so that everyone can be alerted to my mistake! I hope you find this helpful – remember I’m only a wee student at the end of first year LOL If there is anything confusing in my wording or how I’ve structured it, please let me know!

The Trello Activity and Post

    1. Consider the following questions
        1. Do you think you need to be scientifically literate? Please explain?
        2. Do you think you engage with science very much in your everyday life?
        3. Are parents who do not immunize their children irresponsible? Should they be forced to immunize?
    2. Watch the YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfdZTZQvuCo – “Penn and Teller on Vaccinations”
    3. Read the following articles:
    4. What do you think? Post your response on the Trello board. Build upon what your peers have said before you. Challenge something you don’t agree with. Support what you strongly agree with! Everything is up for debate so long as you support your views with credible information
